A cultural festival is being organized to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the relationship between the city of Hoi An in central Quang Nam province and northern Thanh Hoa province.
The festival will take place from March 1 to 4 at Hoi An Park in Thanh Hoa city and presents an opportunity for the two localities to not only strengthen their ties but also promote their culture, heritage, and tourism.
The highlight of the festival is a model of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hoi An ancient town and its unique architectural works, such as old houses and the Japanese-style pagoda.
A range of activities depicting the culture of the two localities is being held, including lion and dragon dances, the teaching and writing of calligraphy, portraiture, chess, making and releasing flower lanterns, which is a feature of Hoi An, and folk games. Folk music such as ca tru, an ancient genre of chamber music with origins in the northern region, and bai choi, a diverse art combining music, poetry, acting, painting and literature from the central region and Hoi An, will be performed. Visitors will also be instructed on singing Ma River songs, which are sung by boatmen in Thanh Hoa working on the river.
There are 30 booths of cuisine, offering Hoi An and Thanh Hoa dishes such as Thanh Hoa’s nem chua (fermented pork rolls) and banh khoai tep (fried rice cakes with small shrimp), and the popular northern dish of banh cuon (steamed rice paper rolls), as well as Hoi An’s banh xeo (fried pancakes with beef and shrimp), cao lau (pork noodles with soup), and my Quang (Quang-style noodle, named after Quang Nam province).
A booth displaying books, photos, VCDs, and leaflets to introduce and promote destinations in the two localities has also been set up.
Hoi An welcomed 3.2 million visitors in 2017, including 1.7 million foreigners, while Thanh Hoa province welcomed 7 million, including 189,000 foreigners; increases of 21.6 per cent and 11.5 per cent, respectively, against 2016 in terms of total numbers.
